Corinne Bailey Rae: The Sea

Corinne Bailey Rae: The SeaCorinne Bailey Rae has wanted to record his second album with a live band playing in the studio permanently unlike its successful debut, which considers a more of a producer. As a result we find songs that retain their delicate, thanks to her voice, really perfect for bossa, but that at some point isolated on guitars and keyboards are a point of dirt.

It’s hard to talk about ‘The Sea’ without mentioning the death of the husband of Corinne, following an overdose of methadone and alcohol in 2008. Many of these compositions were written before, although she acknowledges that they have gained a new sense, and even the older ones have that sense of “after”. Despite the drama of the events and that as told in successive interviews over many months thought it would be unable to talk about this, Corinne has been able to extract beauty of the sad events (that speaks of ‘I Would Like To Call It Beauty ‘), often resulting explicit, mentioning several times the life and death, without touching even sensational.

Although far from the influences that are around the head (Curtis Mayfield, Sly & The Family Stone, Nina Simone, Leonard Cohen), ‘The Sea’ is a good record in which the horror is constantly alternating with the search for hope . Something that is perfectly in different parts of ‘Feels Like The First Time’ or lyrics like “All the world will end, but New World began” ( ‘Diving For Hearts’). The right timing appear naked emotion ( “Love’s On Its Way ‘) and also no place for pop tunes as” Paris Nights / New York Mornings “or” Paper Dolls “among those who shine’ Are You Here ‘, slightly less immediate but very intense (no coincidence that open the disc) or the single ‘I’d Do It All Again’.
